Rollform Solutions in Canterbury
"Quality" and "competence" are words you hear often when talking to the customers of Angus Robertson Mechanical Limited.
Angus Robertson is the chief designer and owner of a unique Canterbury engineering company, which designs and builds machines for the manufacture of a wide variety of formed steel products.
When asked what sets the company apart, Mark Idens, Southern Region Operations Manager, Dimond Industries Limited explains, "The key is quality and the ability to think outside the square". He goes on to say, "We believe he is the best in the country, in terms of innovation, quality and professionalism."
When asked why Steel & Tube Roofing Products, prefer to use Angus Robertson Mechanical, Lyall Simpson, Branch Manager, responds "Knowledge of our business, in particular rollforming".
Rollformers progressively form flat metal strip into a profile with a constant cross section. These profiles may be simple angles or channels, but it is also possible to develop quite complex shapes to carry out specific functions, providing for action of rollers, water flashings or even a locating groove for end user screw fixing.
Holes or forms may be punched into the product automatically as it is processed. While galvanized steel is often used, machines are routinely built which process pre-painted steel and copper.
Rollformed products are found in roofing, construction, garage doors, warehousing and even trim for ovens and appliances.
Lyall Simpson says, "The quality of machinery manufactured is very high, and generally they work without any problems".
There is a staff of 27 who work in clean, well-equipped premises. The plant is equipped with a number of CNC machines. Angus says, "Keeping up with modern techniques, like the CNC and CAD-CAM systems, gives better productivity, and the improved accuracy means that the parts fit together first time."
The company provides a maintenance service for machines made by them, and also provides a repair and development service for rollformers made by other manufacturers. "Rollformers are generally pretty tolerant of adjustment", says Angus, "but when product quality decreases, there are probably a number of things wrong, and the trick is to analyse what is going on, and make the correct few (or a dozen adjustments), and get the customer back into production."
Perhaps the most telling interview response was that of Tony McKay, Manager, Tube Fab Limited, who uses Angus Robertson Mechanical equipment to manufacture replacement wheel rims for the classic car restoration industry. His comment, "Gus is a secret..."
